She writes in her Statement: "This work is about my sensibility and awareness of beauty in the ordinary.
American culture provides the images with a general focus, one that I have examined through two forms--the portrait and human landscape. This approach, I believe, has allowed me to explore everyday America in a way that is personal.
I have brought my camera to trailer parks and vacation colonies, to flea markets and roller rinks. In these common places, I have found a beauty that is both familiar and uneasy. I took these photograps in different towns, small and large, rural and suburban. Each of these is unique, yet they share many common elements. The houses and front porches, the yards and gardens all reflect the expectations and personalities of the people who inhabit them and have made them their own.
The yards might be filled with cars and toys, or with statuary and religious symbols. Often, the natural is in contrast with the artificial; deep woods may lie just beyond neatly manicured lawns, while a plastic deer gazes out of a window. These environments are at once private spaces and public stages.
The people in these images are unposed; the photographs are points where my way of seeing and the way people present themselves to me overlap. A portrait, for me, is the outcome of quiet observation, awareness of expression and gesture, details and subtleties.
I try to convey the subjects' weight and authenticity. Seeing people and their homes, and such American rites as the high school prom or the town parade, I have tried to photograph moments which convey a sense of a place and of an age.
The commonplace and the ordinary are in these images; there is also a sense of loneliness and isolation. Within them, the viewer can find religion, humor, vanity, ambiguity and humanity. The moments which stand out to me are the ones in which I can imagine myself."
