2002년 스톡홀름, 카스텐 홀러(작가)와 옌스 호프만(큐레이터)가 ‘도큐멘타 11’ 직후 가진 미팅에서 대화 중에 한 아이디어가 떠올랐다. 미팅은 이전 도큐멘타 전시들과 여타 대규모 전시들에 대한 생각들에 대한 전반적인 대화에서 시작되었다. 미팅의 끝 무렵, 홀러의 결정적인 코멘트 중 하나가 “어느 날 작가가 도큐멘타 같은 쇼(전시)를 큐레이트 하게 된다면 그건 엄청난 발전일거라 생각한다.”였다.
큐레이터가 몇 십 년 전에 비해 전시를 만드는 과정에 있어서 더 주목 받는 역할을 하는 것은 오늘날 예외적인 일이 아니다. 그들의 직무는 예술 작품들에 대한 대담과 미술관 컬렉션 관리와 같은 역사적으로 관련된 것이었지만, 큐레이터들은 전시를 만들어 내는 것에 점점 더 독창적이고 개념적으로 열중하기 시작했다. 전시회는 전시 감독이라 묘사되는 소위 전시 제작자들의 독창적인 원리가 되었고, 독창적인 개인과 사회간의 촉매제가 되었다. 그렇지만 최근 몇 년간 초점은 다시 바뀌어서 큐레이터의 고착을 예증하기 위해 예술작품들이 고용된 전시들은 많은 비난을 받았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 예술가와 큐레이터간의 창의적이고 지적인 교환은 돌이킬 수 없이 변했고 이 관계에서 새로운 조건들을 만들어 냈다. 그 새로운 조건이 ‘다음 도큐멘타는 작가들에 의해 만들어져야 한다’라는 배경에 있다.
이 프로젝트의 표제(The Next Documenta Should Be Curated By an Artist) 는 요구라기보다 질문이다. 이전 도큐멘타 전시들에 대한 비평이 절대 아니며 작가가 큐레이터가 될 때 직업으로서의 관계를 도발적인 방법으로 모색한다는 의미에서 질문이란 것이다.
큐레이터들은 더 창조적으로 전시회를 만드는 데에 점점 더 많은 관심을 갖고 있는 데 반해 작가들은 큐레이팅에데에 점점 더 열중하고 있다. 예를 들어 2003 베니스 비엔날레에서 '가브리엘 오호즈코', '리크릿 티라바니야' 의 공동 큐레이터로서의 참여와 같이 특히 큰 규모의 국제적인 그룹전시에서 점점 더 진지하게 관여하고 있다. ……
더 중요한 것은, 작가들이 그들 고유의 특별한 관점에서 보는, 도큐멘타와 같은 전시가 도전적인 현재의 실습으로써 대형그룹 전시라는 양식 안에서 전시하기와 예술 보여주기의 적절한 형태로 나타나야 할 그런 전시를, 어떻게 구성하고 조립할 것인가를 위한 간략한 아이디어나 개념을 제안할 수 있었다.

The Next Documenta Should Be Curated By An Artist
During a discussion between artist Carsten Höller and the curator Jens Hoffmann during a meeting in Stockholm in 2002 right after the opening of Documenta 11 an idea emerged that was based on a conversation around concepts of some of the previous Documenta exhibitions and other large scale shows. Towards the end of the meeting one of the conclusive comments of Höller was: "I think that it would be an enormous development if one day an artist would curate a show like Documenta." Based on Höller's wish and formed by the thoughts expressed during the discussion in Sweden grew The Next Documenta Should Be Curated By an Artist.
Today it is nothing exceptional that curators occupy a more noticeable role in the process of producing an exhibition than some decades ago. While their task was historically related to the conservation of art works and the maintenance of a museum collection, curators began more and more to be creatively and conceptually involved in the making of exhibitions. Exhibitions became the creative principle of so-called exhibition makers who were described as exhibition directors and which became catalysts between the creative individual and society. Yet in recent years the focus has shifted again and exhibitions in which art works are employed to illustrate the fixations of curators have been widely criticized. The creative and intellectual exchange between artists and curators has, however, been irreversibly changed and created a new condition in this relationship. It is on this backdrop that The Next Documenta Should Be Curated By an Artist is coming together.
The title of this project is less a demand than a question. A question that in no way articulates a critique of previous Documenta exhibitions but rather investigates in a provocative way the relationship that artists have to the profession of curating. Curators are showing more and more interest in setting up art exhibitions with larger creatively while artists are becoming more seriously involved in curating, especially in large-scale international group exhibitions' note, for example, the participation of Gabriel Orozco and Rirkrit Tiravanija as co-curators of the 2003 Venice Biennale.
For this project, following a continuous string of critiques from artists of exhibition concepts that simply illustrate the curators' personal fixations, a group of artists was invited to reflect upon the conditions of the relationship between artists and curators. More important, the artists were asked to propose a brief concept for how to put together an exhibition such as Documenta that would, from their particular point of view, represent an adequate form of exhibiting and presenting art within the model of a large-scale group exhibition as a challenging contemporary practice.
