Respecting all disappearing things ¡Ü In the country that seems like the whole land is under construction, I don't think there is anyone thinking that the building or the road before one's eye would live up to the lifetime of oneself. The ridge of mountain where used to lit up at night with the lights of the small houses has turned into apartment complex. Sometimes I encounter a palm-sized park as I turn around the corner where I expect to see a small house that I am sure it used to be there. ¡Ü Living in this country, it seems impossible to be blessed with the spaces that we remember as the life of our childhood. Nevertheless, the house in our childhood lasts forever deep down in our hearts and sometimes it's images appear in the dreams. There was a yard that we used to play with doll house and the closet where I used to hide in and fall asleep in the end. The house I spent my childhood life with still remains in my heart as a hometown. The house in our memory which we thought to be firm and everlasting is in fact irregularly constructed. Sometimes there is only empty yard and there is main gate right outside of the master room. The reason that the house which is an inorganic matter is perceived as alive space with variable structure is because that the experience in our memory dominates our thinking about the house. ¡Ü A young artist, Hye In, Lee elaborates the experience in the house in the drawing. About her picture she describes ¡°The images emerged in the infinite space should look partially distorted but we can view them from the front, behind, top and bottom. Just like God is looking into his world.¡± Cycling Earth ¡Ü Timeless carpenters implies the reason why the artists scrutinize "House". Her grand father was a carpenter and house building seems as if it is a passage to understand the truth about the life for her. An old carpenter is cutting a plywood with huge power saw and at the back of him, there are tools neatly arranged at worktable. He is living in a slated roofed house with warm red light. But with roaring power saw, the earth, house and the world is cracked. The creative ability of the carpenter that must have been amazing, would prove the real worth when building a house but it is inevitable to demolish the previous place in order to create a new one. ¡Ü The dualism of the destruction and creativeness can be easily understood as intense mind which connects 'house' with 'economic unit' of Korean society. Especially when it is engaged with the term re-development, it reminds me of supporter and opponents, the ones on temporary leave and the ones on permanent leave, and those who wasn't even able to keep what they have or those who have expanded what they have already gained. In that swirl, only the earth remains unchanged but even that is changed from green land to 'cruel land' ¡Ü The changes of this land which can be called as pushing out or sweeping out, goes through the series of process by which everything blown away and becomes flat surface to be the place of generation. However, this very earth is going to be broken into pieces like glass. The conclusive evidence that the picture of Hye In Lee is about destruction or dissolution for creation is that these house or earth is floating in the space. In the chaos, even the houses and the earth which seemed like in order is being cracked and swept away before it is united again. There is no solidity or eternity. ¡Ü The artist embraces the wound she got from the dissolution of the space that she was brought up and she believes that the house cycles too. When you are parting with the loved ones you believe in the cycle ring of the universe and house to her is like part of herself that she wants to preserve and remember by. House to the artist seems family, home and symbol of trust for the loved ones rather than the house as it is. For her father who led the party for the re development of the village, she has complicated feelings. A father who kept the peace of home built the house with his own hands and made her stay in the big and peaceful family. However, her father demolished what he had built and built a new house. She witnessed the visions suggested by her father and the conflicts made between the neighbors. She emphasized on her father and showed his emotions which must be the desire to keep the "house'. ¡á by CHOEUNJUNG
